*yawn* Bwah. 11:00 PM on Christmas Eve. I really should head to bed if'n I wanna be up opening presents at a decen time tomorrow. *devious grin*

But stuff has happened, and thus it must be blogged. Nothing hugely important, but...

Solstice passed relatively quietly - although I wasn't able to get out at sunset and sunrise like I wanted to. Went at midnight instead, and figured that sufficed. ^^ I really do like this end of the year more than summer, in that respect - I'm more a person of darkness than light, and thus the waning days suit me better. But turn around now it must, the sun 'reborn', and get longer again.

Got the last of my shopping done yesterday, but still braved the malls today to go look for laptop deals. Apparently nothing much goes on sale Boxing Day - unless I go to the computer megastores all the way out in Vancouver, and I don't wanna bother. ^^; I'll just have to wait 'til I save more money, I guess.

Have to get my books for school at some point within the next week. Hm.

My sister's gift from Florida actually arrived ON TIME this year - it generally doesn't, usually getting here in February. ^^; We hailed it as somewhat of a miracle, LOL. On the contrast, we sent her present out today. Someone's gotta continue the tradition! XD My shirts from ThinkGeek also got here today (weirdly enough, considering I only ordered them Monday) - decided on the Digital Angel and "You Are Dumb" shirts. Insulting people in subtle ways that they don't understand is fun. ^^

Went on a downloading spree a couple days ago, and found much new sheet music, 'specially from FF6. ^^ Pretty stuff. Hard to play, some of it - the rhythms in three of the pieces are quite difficult, all sixteenth notes in horribly hard to get places, but I've commited myself to learning them. *nodnod*

And me bro got the collector's edition of Monty Python and the Holy Grail from one of his friends yesterday. ^^; Came with the screenplay, full of delicious ready-made quotes to call up (I'd write a good one down now, but I don't have it near me, so we'll just say - "It's just a flesh wound!"), as well as a two-disc DVD set. Lots of yummy bonus features that only completely fucked up people (such as Dad and bro and I) can understand. ^^

And, lastly, certain comp-sci e-mails are very amusing. ^^ Invitation to a party, for one - I missed it in time to do anything about it, though - and the lovely Night Before Crackdown, which I will lovingly post here for your reading pleasure. Feel the power of the geeks (Simeon in particular)!

The Night Before Crackdown

'Twas the night before Crackdown when all through the house
Not a peripheral was powered, not even a mouse.
The CD's were back in their cases with care,
In hopes that this somehow preserved them from wear.
The mainboards were neatly lined up in their rack,
Discharging capacitors that fueled the Hack.
And I in my PJs and Rex on his chair
Had just settled down for a long winter's stare.
When on my cell phone there arose such a ring
I sprang up to see what this e-mail would bring.
As I did this I kicked on the power in a flash
And I stared at the phone as the box started bash.
The compact fluorescent just over the screen
Gave a 20-Watt lustre to pixels of green.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But an e-mail whose subject instilled in me fear,
Whose sender was clearly observant and quick;
The MOTD on fraser was boasting my nick!
More rapid than wireless the packets did fly
I both logged onto fraser and dialed Ruth in reply.
Now ls! Now rm! Now vi and grep!
What a horrible blunder to hide from VanEpp!
To the top of the file! (I could not lose it all)
Now Delete! Now Insert mode! Delete away all!

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle mount to the sky,
To csss-active the rumour did spread
And I knew in the morning I'd surely be dead.
And then in a twinkling, the power went POOF!
My phone still glowed green with the call placed to Ruth.
As I picked up the phone to see if she was there
Rex began snoring, and shook the whole chair.
"Hello?" I could hear from the end of the line.
"Say, Ruth," I began, "Is your power still fine?"
I could hear Ruth was laughing from her feet to her head.
"Did you manage to fix it?" she asked me instead.
My eyes didn't twinkle, my dimples weren't merry.
I felt like a worker from some on-strike ferry.
"The damage was done, as you already know,"
I barked as my cell phone emitted its glow.
The one shred of hope I held like a true geek
Was that somehow, just somehow, the news wouldn't leak.
Ruth was still laughing, but wished me good luck.
As she hung up the phone I regained my lost pluck.

As the power returned, my fluorescent glowed red
This relieved me somewhat from the feeling of dread.
I spoke not a word, but went straight back to work
Responding to email, even some from a jerk.
I at last drifted off just aside of the keys
And awoke to a "beep" with a cramp in my knees.
I stared at the screen and I gave a low whistle
VanEpp's e-mail stood out like a nuclear missile.
The subject proclaimed as it scrolled out of sight,

Dear student,
Please use fraser for coursework, not silly poetry.
Sincerely,
csilop
