Slowly Regaining Sanity
Dec. 11th, 2005 10:28 pmMweh. So. Classes are done, exams are done, and I've finally a chance to relax. Hooray!
We had snow for a bit - it started falling a few days before the start of December, which was outright funky. It almost never snows that early here. There were a few falls of it throughout the week, but then it started raining. I think most of it's gone, now, but there are still a few small patches up on the roof and the backyard. SFU got rightly dumped in it, which was good indeed, except for when they started turning around the buses at the top of the hill, at one point. I had to walk up from just past the last set of lights. >.> It's not that short a jaunt, particularly since it's uphill and it was snowy and slippery.
The end of semester social went pretty well. I got the bar organized, thankfully, and the casino was pretty busy all day. I spent quite a bit of time both observing and dancing at the DDR station - I brought up the PS2, two pads, and the games, and went to. XD Managed to unlock Sakura and Paranoia Survivor before, thankfully, so there was almost the full mix on Extreme 2. And shit, but I hate to admit it, I finally found folks better than me among the CSSS crowd. XD Watching Curtis and Anto go at Sakura on heavy was almost creeping me out for a bit.
Ah well, I just need more practice, and more inclination to wearing myself out. Mweh.
Mom and dad are still arguing. I still really haven't talked to him, since I've been so busy. He was over earlier today for Sean's birthday dinner-thing, but I mostly stayed out of the way. I just don't want to deal with either of them until they stop being dolts, really.
I dunno how I did with exams. MACM and stats could go either way, really. I think I passed them both, but I'm not certain. I definitely hope I did with MACM - need it to take 307 in the next semester.
...And I reeeeeaaaaally don't want to have to take it over again. >.>
Ling and geography (which were right in a row on Saturday afternoon-evening) went alright. I think I'll get a fairly good mark on Ling, anyways. Geography's a bit iffy, but I'm certain I pulled off something decent, anyways.
It's weird, though, how I keep managing to get all my exams right at the beginning of the exam period, and usually have two on the same day. It's not good for the insanity-levels. Turning me into a hermit is not good times.
Went to Trav's dad's work-Christmas-party-thing on Friday night. It was fun - good food, free bar, etc etc. We danced a bit, but unfortunately, Trav seems to have a fixation on spinning. @.@ Dizzy not the good. My skirt, however, was almost perfectly tailored for spinning. I dunno if that was a good thing (since it looked neat) or a bad thing (since it gave more reason to spin).
It was nice, however, to see him, as he said, 'in his element' - that is, talking about stuff without having to be prodded, being affectionate, and all of that. So, yeah, enjoyable evening.
So, yeah. I took the week off of work while I was studying/writing - I probably start again on Tuesday, although I have to call just to check. I know I'm going to be covering a few days for Marla while she takes a break... I just don't know exactly when that is, yet. Oh well, it'll give me a good chance to work on the rejections and stuff that I never have the time to do. XD
I have to get out and do Christmas shopping sometime this week, probably. I have no idea what I'm getting anyone yet. I have a feeling it'll be a bit of a cheaper year, though, since I'm still lacking in funds. Thankfully, I think I got paid last week, so that'll help a little once I get the cheque in.
Started playing in a new text-based adventurey thing, since none of the Weyrs seem to be going anywheres. (Well, that's not completely true - DCW is still seeing a bit of activity, but it's a couple posts a week at best.) PernMUSH, however, seems to be quite active and full of folk, so that should satisfy me for a bit. It remains to be seen what I'm going to be doing with Raela, though. The next Hatching at Ista Weyr won't be for a few months yet - they actually operate on schedules - so I've got to find a way to keep her occupied until the Searchriders go out, and even then, there's no guarantee she'll be Searched or impress a dragon. I have a few weeks to decide, though, so it should be alright.
And lastly, an observation on the season.
I'm getting friggin' sick of the folks who keep squabbling over what the hell to greet each other with. It just so happens that a number of religions and cultures share a holiday or two or three in this general time of year. Thus, it just makes sense to me that they should stop being pricks about whether to say 'merry Christmas', 'happy Hannukah', 'happy Kwanzaa', 'eid Ramadan' (although I know that's over already), 'merry Yuletide', or gods-forbid 'season's greetings' or 'happy holidays', and just say whatever they feel like saying.
Some folks are saying that they feel offended when greeted with holiday-specific sayings (notably aethists, or people who are celebrating a different holiday). Whatever. You, my dears, need to learn that there are people who celebrate holidays - and not necessarily yours - around this time of year, and that they're thuswise going to be cheerful and happy about it and extend well-wishes to you. Take the wishes as they are, as an invitation to be happy and share in the joy that surrounds this time of year, and apply them to whatever you believe, if not what the well-wisher is actually saying. Most of the celebrations, as far as I know, are those cherishing light and life and hope, so the underlying meaning is all the same.
I mean, I'm not going to flip out if someone greets me with a Merry Christmas. I know I'm in a minority - I don't celebrate anything in particular (except maybe Economy Boosting Day), but if I did, it would probably be Yule. I have a feeling that not many folk are wishing each other happy Yule, so I'm perfectly fine with getting other greetings. Myself, I'll stick to happy holidays or season's greetings, or maybe merry Yule if I'm feeling especially happy with life.
On the other hand, some folk are getting angry because they think they should be greeted with the proper line specific to their celebration. Those people need to pull their heads out of their asses and realize that they do not have a monopoly on holidays during the season. Sorry, most of us well-wishers aren't mind-readers, and we don't know what particular line will make you feel happy and squishy inside. Also, the most vocal folk about this (Christians, I'm looking at you now) are making a fuss when their holiday is actually located at the wrong time of year. Sorry, dearies, but this Jesus fellow of yours was actually born in the spring, not winter. Back in, oh, somewhere around 200-500, the priests decided to make the holiday coincide with pagan celebrations for one reason or another. You can make your own hypothesis as to why. I don't see, therefore, why they should be getting all upset over a greeting. Like it or not, not everybody is going to believe in the same things as everyone else, so we have to be nice and respectful and understanding, and just smile and accept the fact that 'oh, hello, someone's wishing me nice things. Thank you!'.
'Cause, then, y'know, we might end up actually getting along, having a nice time together, and get back to celebrating the light and love and hope, rather than being all angry about it and clouding what should otherwise be a nice time of year.
And that is all I have to say.
