Oh, Canada.
Mar. 4th, 2010 07:39 pmLet's just ignore everything the Conservative Party has done to erode the rights of women within Canada lately - whether it's dismissing feminist issues or making huge funding cuts to programs that help women and children or even just distantly rumbling about possibly making abortion a hot-button issue again. They're awesome feminists, right? We can't have the fucking national anthem be gender discriminatory, can we?
Everything Ignatieff says in that article is goddamn on the money, for once.
"But, I mean, no disrespect to those who feel strongly on this issue, but, for heaven's sake, we have some very important challenges and every time the government is asked to do something real, it does something symbolic.
"There's lots of things to do for women that are more important than changing the words of the national anthem..."
There are so many other issues they could be attempting to tackle. Oh, hell no. Let's just go change the anthem instead, and distract everyone from the real issues with the fucking uproar that'll cause.
Of course, the worst of it is that a lot of people will look at the omg!evil!feminists! as having caused the uproar in the first place, when I know I sure as hell didn't have an issue with the lyrics, and I know most other rational feminists probably don't, either. This is an exceptionally bad time to be doing this, too, what with the whole country coming off of the high of a huge international party that, quite frankly, we rocked at. National pride is really, really friggin' huge right now. The public is going to screech like banshees at anything that suggests that their beloved national institution be changed.
And of course when this is brought up with the Conservadolts, they'll look all innocent and point at women and say "But we're just acting on issues we've been notified of!"
